Portsmouth, New Hampshire – Anyone looking for an easily-portable, giftable and unique memento of the Portsmouth NH 400 anniversary – and those planning to collect all of the PNH400 collectible merchandise – can now add the PNH400 Challenge Coin to their lists.

The Challenge Coin tradition is said to go back to Roman times, but it is a familiar and cherished one among the military. Locals know, for example, that US Navy commanders award coins with their ships’ motto and crest to high-performing crew members, making them sought-after symbols of a job well-done. The “challenge” part comes in when a crew member makes the call by tapping his coin on the bar in a local watering-hole. The last to produce his own coin in reply is tasked with buying a drink for the challenger.

Now the PNH400 Challenge Coin – designed and manufactured by an experienced challenge coin team and orchestrated through the PNH400 Merchandise Team and their Portsmouth Navy Shipyard contacts – is available for purchase at portsmouthnh400.org/portsmouth-nh-400-mercantile and in the PNH400 merchandise shop at the Portsmouth Historical Society, 10 Middle Street in Portsmouth. Produced in a limited edition of 200 coins, each individually-numbered coin is $20, with proceeds going to support the official events and programming of PNH400.

The PNH400 Challenge Coin is the same size and appreciable weight as other official coins. At 2” wide, both sides are finished in colorful enamel with gold-colored accents. One side bears the PNH400 logo and slogan, “History Lights Our Way, 1623-2023” and the City slogan, “Portsmouth The City of the Open Door.” The reverse shows a clipper ship under sail and the informal PNH400 motto “History, Culture and Memories.”
